A campervan conversion is a delivery or passenger van that has been rebuilt internally into a purpose-built camper with sleeping, cooking, power, water and storage systems. The base van stays on the road under its original registration, but the interior is redesigned and refitted from scratch to suit the way you want to travel.
At Focus RV Group we build those conversions end to end in our Campbellfield workshop. Every discipline needed to finish the van is on the same floor: cabinetmakers, licensed electricians, Type A gas fitters, plumbing and mechanical techs. Nothing is outsourced, which means quality is consistent and the project has one point of accountability from the first sketch to the final road test.
Our conversion customers range from weekenders who want a comfortable bed and a kitchen for surf trips, through to full-timers building a vehicle for a lap of Australia. Over the last 10+ years we've converted more than 20 van platforms across the high-roof, mid-size and compact classes. Short, medium, long and extra-long wheelbases. 2WD and 4WD base vehicles. If your van isn't listed below, call us and we'll confirm whether we can convert it.
Mercedes Sprinter, Fiat Ducato, Renault Master, Peugeot Boxer, LDV Deliver 9, Iveco Daily. Stand-up internal height is what unlocks a full kitchen, an internal shower and a fixed north-south bed on the longer wheelbases. The trade-off is height and payload: check your parking, and leave headroom in the GVM for water, batteries and everything you pack.
VW Transporter, Ford Transit, Renault Trafic, Hyundai iLoad, Peugeot Expert. The sweet spot for couples who want a van that still fits a standard parking bay and most garages. Beds usually run east-west, so height matters less than internal width — and a pop-top adds standing room when you are parked without adding height when you are driving.
Toyota HiAce, VW Caddy, Renault Kangoo. The pick for surfers, weekenders and city travellers who want the van to stay usable as a daily driver. Space is the constraint, so the layout does the work: slide-out kitchens, convertible seating and a pop-top for standing room. Water and battery capacity are sized down to match.
We also build on pre-converted chassis, cab-chassis layouts and cab-over motorhome bases. If you have not bought the van yet, talk to us first — wheelbase, roof height, drivetrain and payload decide what layout is even possible, and it is far cheaper to pick the right base vehicle than to design around the wrong one.
Every conversion is custom, but the tiers below are a useful starting point. They describe the scope most customers land on, and help frame the conversation when we're drawing up your layout.
A bed, a basic kitchen, 12V lighting, a small house battery with solar top-up, and a proper insulation package. Designed for weekend trips, surf runs and short holidays. This tier is popular on HiAce and Transporter platforms.
A full bed setup, proper kitchen with a compressor fridge and cooktop, house battery bank with DC-DC charger, roof solar, fresh and grey water tanks. Sized for multi-week trips where you want to stay off-grid for several days at a time.
Everything in the Level 2 conversion plus a larger lithium battery bank, full shower or cassette toilet option, diesel heating, diesel cooktop, external shower hookup and an annexe awning. Sized for months of continuous travel through the full range of Australian climates.
Your brief, your layout, any van platform, anything you can sketch. Full consultation, concept design, approved layout and a written quote before the first panel is cut. Most full custom builds sit on Sprinter, Ducato, Master or Iveco Daily platforms.

Every conversion is built from the chassis up through the systems below. Exact scope, brand selection and specification is itemised in your written quote so there are no surprises during or after the build.
Our joinery is built in house at Campbellfield in birch ply with marine-grade finishes. Piano hinges, locking drawers, soft-close cabinetry and upholstered dinettes. We do not outsource any cabinetry component, which means quality and fit are consistent across every build.
House battery bank (AGM or lithium), DC-DC charger, 240V inverter where required, roof solar array, dedicated switchboard, USB outlets, 12V and 240V sockets, and LED lighting zoned to the way you'll use the van. All work is completed by a licensed electrician and certificates are issued on handover.
Fresh and grey water tanks, pressure pumps, internal and external tap fit-outs, hot water systems and water filtration. Tank size is matched to the travel style (weekender, touring or full-time).
LPG cooktops, diesel cooktops, Type A gas compliance, ducted extraction fans and external BBQ points. Gas work is carried out by a licensed Type A gas fitter and certified on handover.
Diesel heaters for all-season travel, 12V roof fans for warm climates, 240V air conditioning for powered sites, compressor fridges and dedicated insulation packages to suit your destination profile.
Fixed beds, east-west or north-south bed layouts, pop-top beds for compact vans, dinette-to-bed conversions, bench seating and custom upholstery. Bed orientation is chosen with your platform wheelbase and sleeping partners in mind.
Cassette toilets, composting toilets, internal showers, full wet-room finishes and external shower hookups. Bathroom scope is often the single biggest variable between tiers.
Pop-top conversions, roof beds, solar arrays, awnings, roof racks and ventilation. All sealing and cut-outs are carried out to manufacturer spec.
Van walls are curved, ribbed and rarely symmetrical. Because the cabinetry is built in the same workshop the van is parked in, panels are scribed to the actual vehicle and adjusted on the spot — instead of arriving flat-packed from a third party and being packed out with filler strips.
12V, 240V, solar and LPG are signed off by licensed trades inside our workshop, and your compliance paperwork is issued when the work finishes. That documentation is what your insurer and any future buyer will ask for, so it is worth having in hand from day one.
You approve the layout, materials and cost in writing before any panel is cut. If the scope changes mid-build — you decide to add a shower, or upgrade the battery bank — you approve that variation before the invoice moves. No surprise line items at handover.
On a split build, the electrician waits on the cabinetmaker, who waits on the plumber, and a fortnight disappears between workshops. Ours sit on the same floor and work to the same build schedule, so the trades sequence around each other instead of queuing.
Our team are caravan and RV travellers themselves. That shows up in the small decisions a spec sheet never covers — where the light switch lands when you are already in bed, which drawer you open with your hands full, how the kitchen works in the rain with the door open.
We are an authorised warranty agent and an approved insurance repairer, running servicing, repairs and refurbishment from the same site. When your van needs a service or something goes wrong three years in, it comes back to the people who built it and still have your job file.
We start by talking through your travel style, sleeping setup, cooking and power needs, timeline and budget. Bring your van to the workshop if you have it. If you haven't bought one yet, we'll help you narrow the platform before you commit.
Once we have the brief, we draw up a layout that matches it to your van platform. Cabinetry footprint, bed orientation, kitchen and power zones, water locations, bathroom sizing if included. You review the layout and we iterate if needed.
When the layout is right, we send an itemised written quote covering labour, materials, systems and timeline. Nothing starts until you sign off. If you want to stage the build across phases, we quote each phase separately.
Fit-out starts in the workshop. We run weekly progress updates so you always know where the build is up to. Most builds land in the 4 to 6 week window, depending on scope and whether we're waiting on any long-lead parts.
Electrical, gas and weight compliance is signed off. We road-test the finished van and run you through every system before you drive it home. You leave with certificates, a handover pack and our direct number for post-handover questions.
The level pricing above is a starting point; the final figure depends on your van platform and the systems you choose. Every build at Focus RV Group is quoted individually and in writing, with labour, materials and systems itemised. Below is how long each level typically takes, and which decisions move the number most.
Level 1 Conversion 4–6 weeks
Bed, basic kitchen, 12V lighting, small house battery and insulation. With no water, gas or bathroom work in the critical path, the schedule is driven by cabinetry and fit-out.
Level 2 Conversion 4–6 weeks
Full kitchen, fresh and grey water, roof solar and a house battery bank. Plumbing and electrical run in parallel with the cabinetry, so the same window carries a fuller schedule.
Level 3 Conversion 4–6 weeks
Everything in Level 2 plus diesel heating, a shower or cassette toilet and a larger lithium bank. Gas and compliance sign-off sit at the end of the build, so the final week is reserved for testing and certification.
Full Custom Build 4–6 weeks
Bespoke layout and systems. Concept design, layout approval and long-lead appliance orders all happen before the build slot opens, which keeps the on-tools window in the same range.

Our workshop is in Campbellfield on Sydney Road, with easy access from the Hume Freeway. Melbourne customers drive in from the northern suburbs, the inner city, the east and the west, and we regularly take on day-drive drop-offs from Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo and Shepparton.
We also take on conversion projects from interstate. Vans are delivered to the workshop at the start of the build and collected at handover. If you're travelling from NSW, SA, QLD or TAS, get in touch early so we can plan the build window around your travel.
You do not need to sit and wait on the build. Your van stays with us for the full window, we send progress updates as each stage finishes, and we run secure storage on the same Campbellfield site if you need somewhere for it before the slot opens or after handover.
